Certainly rat teeth are strong enough to chew through the PVC material, but I'm not sure how easy it is for them to actually get a grip on it since it's pretty big (compared to their mouths) and round. Or maybe they just don't try. It seems rats chew if they know they should be able to get through somewhere, but for some reason cannot. At any rate, we've had a PVC cage for probably 5 years now and I don't recall every seeing any chew marks on it, let alone a piece needing to be replaced.

I searched many different ideas before I finally chose your plans to make my rat cage from. I found a nice under bed storage tub and built my cage into that. I changed one part of your design and I just wanted to share it with you. I took steel washers and used zip ties to hold them to the cage. This worked well and was fairly easy to do, and the magnets hold very well to the washers. I love your cage idea, thank you so much.

Hmmm ... why not just wire up a linev thermostat? I use a Johnson Controls A419 that cost me $45, some romex and a GFI outlet. Set it to 210F on heating mode, plug in the hotplate and set it to low. I guess it's the same thing, but you don't have to build it ;)

I need to build one of these for my AB smoker. Now that you've had a chance to use it for a while, I'm curious to know if you have any suggestions for improvement or just to make things easier.

Great project, thanks for sharing it.

The most you've had on it is 145? What's the purpose of having a squat rack if you're not gonna squat some weight?

This squat rack is extremely dangerous. You are going to kill yourself or break your neck using it. Putting so much weight at the top with support in only one plane is a disaster waiting to happen (ie, it is unstable and will turn over eventually). You know you can buy a real rack for like $350, right? There is a reason that real racks do not look like this...

Next time you go camping there are several areas that you just beautiful to see. Fresno dome, Chiquito Creek, which is just south of Yosemite National Park. Lots of hiking, creeks, meadows, etc. The view is spectecular.
