Today, somebody took a gun to school and killed 31 people.

There isn’t a single thing right with that sentence. It happened, though. Lucky for me, nobody I know was involved, but I feel deeply sorry for anybody who was hurt, their families and friends.

I wanted to write something about what might drive somebody to do this, but I just have no clue. I can understand suicide, but randomly killing other people makes no sense whatsoever. So instead, I want to put today’s tragedy in perspective a little bit. When people say they’re going to put something “in perspective,” that usually means they’re going to make it seem not as bad as you think it is, and I guess I’m doing that. You’ve been warned.

Every day, over 100 people die in traffic accidents in the USA. That means today 100 people died in a traffic accident, and a third as many died in the Virginia Tech shooting. Tomorrow, we’ll be back to normal with 100 people dying in traffic accidents. On Wednesday another 100 people will die in traffic accidents. On Thursday another 100 will die in traffic accidents, and so on. When you look at it that way, the V.T. shooting isn’t terribly significant in the grand scheme of things. If you would have tried to prevent the V.T. shooting if you had the chance, then help prevent unnecessary traffic deaths. Drive safe.

In Iraq, events like the V.T. shooting are common. A quick search finds 2 mass killings in the past 10 days. 56 were killed on Saturday, and 17 were killed the Sunday before that. Because I live in the USA I am more affected by the V.T. shooting. I don’t know how I would feel if something like this would happen every week, and I don’t want to find out. I suspect Iraqis know what it feels like, though, and because the USA is currently in charge there I feel somewhat responsible for their loss. I hope the USA as a country can learn what such loss feels like from the V.T. shooting. Once everybody agrees that such senseless killing needs to be stopped, then maybe we can grow some backbone and do something about it.

Yesterday President Bush signed the military commissions act. Among other things it says that people who aren’t U.S. citizens (like me) and are accused of terrorism can be held indefinitely without trial. It’s just a small step to secret police making people disappear. We already have secret courts, secret prisons, and all kinds of scary stuff going on without any oversight at all. The Washington Post has a nice page where you can see who voted for this disaster, with information about who voted which way in the house and in the senate. If you are a U.S. citizen, I ask that you vote those people out of office and let them know why you’re doing so. If you’re not a U.S. citizen then you might be interested in this t-shirt. (Note that I set the commission on that shirt to $0, so I’m not making any money here.) I wore mine to work today and made a few people think about this issue more than they otherwise would have. Finally, I urge everybody to donate to the American Civil Liberties Union. Let’s make the United States of America the Land of the Free again.

There’s a lot of discussion about the Iraq war, and the White House has succesfully framed the debate into two camps: finish the mission (whatever that is), and immediate pull-out. I’ve hear a smattering of better thought-out plans, but I just wanted to add mine to that list.

The first step is to acknowledge that we made a big mess out of Iraq. We can’t just pull out because we now have a responsibility to clean up that mess. We’re spending about $132 billion per year on this war. Instead of using that money to do what we think is best, let’s give it to the Iraqi government. If they want to use that money to pay for the US military to continue their operations in Iraq that is fine. If they want to just give that money directly to their citizens (almost $5000 per person, which is more than Iraq’s per-capita GDP) that is also fine. I imagine the real use of that money will be more creative and more effective than either of those 2 possibilities. So next year we pay Iraq $132 billion, and I propose that every year thereafter we pay them $13.2 billion less than the previous year. In 10 years our obligations to Iraq end, and the government there will finally have the resources to address the issues they are facing.

With the yesterday’s passage of new detainee legislation yesterday, I lost my civil rights. If, in a law officer’s judgment, I provide “material support” to the enemy, I can be accused of being an enemy combatant. Once I get that status they can lock me up, and because I’m not a US citizen they don’t ever have to give me a trial. I can’t even force a trial by suing the government because I wouldn’t have that right anymore either. I don’t think America is the land of the free anymore. If you agree and want do something about it you should vote for politicians who care about civil rights, contribute money to the ACLU, and educate your friends.
