Thanks, Mark.

It just took too long to get my shoes on. I felt that if I'd been pedalling all that time I would've been way ahead of where I was. Getting more speed before reaching down might have solved that.

Good ideas on the wetsuit. I'll try that next time.

I'm not worried about the helmet thing. It went something like. Verbal expletive! Seeing that there were several water bottles on the ground at the exit to the transition area. Dropping my helmet next to them. Smiling at the spectators who smiled back at me, because everybody (including me) thought it was funny.

Well done. Glad you tried with the shoes on the pedals; what went wrong do you think that made you feel it wasn't a success? Lessons for next time, more speed before you reach down?? Too out of breath causing lack of concentration?? COuldn't get feet in becuase they were still wet? All these can be resolved. Trust me it is quicker than running with cleats/shoes. I've trained nearly 100 people in person to do it this way and they are all faster.

Next time you need to practise getting out of your wetsuit withou sitingdown. I know you think you'll rip/damage it but you won't just pull it below the knees in one hard swoop, then stand on one the body with one leg, pull the other out, use that leg to stand on the other side and pull the remaining leg out. The wetsuit comes off quicker while your body is wet. If its a long run to transition find a place on the side of the water and take it off there before all the water drains out.

And the helmet thing, don't worry we've all done that...

With a bit of practise you can get a transition down to about 2-mins, or 1.20-1.40 without a wetsuit... and its not hard work. Try taking that amount off your swim or run...

Good luck and welcome to the club
